This book explores the rich intersections between yoga, meditation, somatic psychology, neuroscience and philosophy.
It is loaded with information and ideas and designed as inspiration for both teachers and students and as a manual for the Awakened Heart, Embodied Mind yoga teacher training as well as a text for other trainings.
This is a unique, contemporary, integrative perspective that I think all will find enriching, thought provoking and life enhancing.
Part One lays out the basic principles of our approach to yoga and how it is infused with ideas, information and techniques from somatic psychology, neuroscience and Buddhist meditation. This includes the "Trinity Sutra," a set of aphorisms designed to condense these principles in a more poetic way.
Part Two is a unique exploration of the Chakra System from
the Kunadalini Tantra as a map of mind/body relationships, stages of development, and a way to reflect on various key aspects of inner work. This section includes reference to “high charge” anatomy points and descriptions of chakra-themed yoga sequences, as well as meditations and journaling exercises on each chakra and its related psychology.
Please help me spread the word to yoga students, teachers and teacher trainers!
Awakened Heart Embodied Mind A Modern Yoga Philosophy Infused with Somatic Psychology Neuroscience edition by Julian Walker Religion Spirituality eBooks
I highly recommend Awakened Heart, Embodied Mind (A.H.E.M.) to anyone interested in modern perspectives on yoga philosophy. Julian Walker is a talented writer; he is an accomplished critical thinker, able to communicate a highly analytical, fresh and original perspective on yoga philosophy in a very accessible manner. His prose is flexible, ranging from matter-of-fact to picturesque and poetic, as best suits the topic at hand. A.H.E.M. is an "expanded adaptation" of the manual for Walker's - and co-teacher Hala Khouri's - 200 hour yoga teacher training course of the same name, but its appeal is not limited to those who wish to teach. The A.H.E.M. philosophy is a cutting-edge blend of traditional yoga philosophy, Buddhist meditation, neuroscience and somatic (body-based) psychology; it trades in metaphysical speculation, building a foundation instead on concepts backed by scientific evidence, such as mind/body integration, brain function, the physiological and emotional affects of trauma and human interdependence and interaction. Lest this sound dry and clinical, be assured it is not. While the foundation of the philosophy is backed by scientific fact, it is in support of a practice of inner work leading to authentic, reality-based personal transformation, and includes integration of objective fact and subjective, personal experience. So if you are primarily interested in yet another interpretation of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and the related methods for transcending human experience, read elsewhere. If you are interested in a perspective on yoga philosophy that is supported by newer knowledge about human physiology and experience, that assists in a more effective use of yogic practice for the purpose of personal transformation, and that assumes an intention of engaging more fully in life rather than transcending it, then you will likely find this book fascinating.Full disclosure: I am a student in Walker's and Khouri's current A.H.E.M. training. However, I can assure you that this review was not written at the request of my teachers; I am writing it because I am greatly inspired by their approach and enthusiastically support them and the A.H.E.M. philosophy. I would love to see it get more wide-spread exposure, as I believe it is a much-needed perspective in Western yoga culture.

Awakened Heart Embodied Mind A Modern Yoga Philosophy Infused with Somatic Psychology Neuroscience edition by Julian Walker Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Approachable, informative and loving.... Just as Julian is! So worth it. So many juicy rich tidbits for enjoying our lovely bodies and breath. I hope a physical book comes out soon so I can share it with my friends and family. Love & Be Loved.. ONE LOVE.
Every yoga teacher should read this book because it reveals a widespread issue facing many newcomers to yoga -the aftermath of trauma. It describes the symptoms and causes, informs of the value of yoga ad gives practical guidelines on how lead a trauma-sensitive class.
It's an excellent beginning, with practical, easily implemented techniques, to making your Yoga practice more than just an exercise. Unfortunately, as far as I can find, it is only available in .
Wonderful (work) book. I have been taking Walkers workshops, and its an unique experience by itself. Read the book and take his workshops, and you will realize how our body, mind, brain and psyche is connected, and how we can transform ourselves to be the controller of our mind & life.
This is a book for teachers and students alike - anyone who wants to know more about how yoga can transform your body and mind. Well written, informative and insightful, I found the methods set out here easy to follow and profoundly useful for both my teaching and my own personal practice. Highly recommended for anyone interested in learning more about yoga and the transformation it can encourage in practitioners.
For years now I've dropped in on Julian Walker's weekend yoga classes at Santa Monica Yoga. In fact, I drive all the way from southern Utah to take his class and hang out in SM for the weekend. And all this time I've observed that I feel better after Julian's class than I do after any other yoga class (and I take quite a few from a wide variety of teachers). I knew that Julian's sequence was different but I never knew why it helped me more than others. Actually I thought it was because of his side stretches that really open up my side body. I read his new book and discovered for the first time that Julian is teaching a chakra opening sequence. And in the book he reveals his specific sequence. So glad I took the time to read it.
I only wish I could put my hands on a hard copy and illustrated version of this book.
Great work!
I've known Julian Walker indirectly (through social media) for several years, so it is with great pleasure that I offer this brief review of his new book, Awakened Heart, Embodied Mind. In the interest of openness, I bought this book as soon as I knew it was available, although Julian offered me a free review copy later the same day.
The combination of yoga theory, somatic psychology, neuroscience, and Buddhist meditation and the application of this model to the Chakra system (which is foundational for yoga theory) is the kind of unified, interdisciplinary approach that we need more of in spiritual circles, in psychology, and in our efforts to understand who we are as human beings.
This book, in essence, is a handbook or teaching manual for yoga teachers in training. I know very little about yoga, other than having been a student of Hatha Yoga many years ago. However, I am a specialist in trauma therapy, somatic psychology, and embodied cognition. While I have no intention of ever becoming a yoga instructor, I find this book very useful in helping my clients understand themselves and how their emotions, sensations, thoughts, and experiences are integrated within the mind-body system (in essence, the mind is the body-brain).
The bottom line is that in this book, Julian integrates "ancient and modern, Eastern and Western, intentional and embodied approaches in grounded way" that is also infused with intelligence and heart.
